Participatory Development Associates (PDA) is supporting Beyond Beans in conducting a Cocoa Farmer Census and Market Analysis in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The census is designed to identify the Income Generating Activities (IGAs) that farmers are currently engaged in or would like to pursue, while also uncovering the challenges they face—particularly beyond financial constraints, such as technical and capacity support needs. This information will feed into a market analysis of the most prominent IGAs, helping Beyond Beans assess their viability, profitability, and potential for cocoa farmers.
The PDA team, working alongside Beyond Beans officers, deployed to the field to collect data from 2,000 farmers under the Income Accelerator Programme (IAP), including both VSLA and non-VSLA members across the Bekwai and Nsokote districts. Key activities included:
- Development of data collection tools
- Scripting of the survey tool in KoboCollect
- Enumerator recruitment, training, and deployment
- Field data collection
- Data monitoring, cleaning, and management
- Data analysis and reporting
The Census Report has been compiled and delivered to Beyond Beans, and data collection for the market analysis is currently ongoing in both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
