Participatory Development Associates (PDA) is building the economic and social capacities of over 936 cocoa farmers in the Ashanti Region through Village Savings and Loans (VSLA) schemes and Gender Action and Learning Systems (GALS); with generous funding from Nestle Cocoa Plan and in partnership with Cocoanect and Cocoa Merchants Limited. Since its pilot in Niger in 1991, CARE’s VSLA methodology has matured to cover close to 10 million people in over 30 countries, in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Ghana is one of the African countries experiencing a growing presence of the VSLA groups as an attempt to combat poverty through collective action.
