Tony’s Chocolonely (Tony’s), a Dutch social enterprise, was founded in response to the distressing reality of child labor and modern slavery in cocoa plantations in West Africa. Tony’s unwavering commitment is to ensure that every chocolate bar is 100% slave-free.
As a wholesaler, Tony’s focuses on importing, exporting, and selling chocolate products and raw materials, with the assumption and condition that local cocoa farmers receive fair compensation. This commitment is a step towards a chocolate industry free from exploitation and inequality.
PDA has been contracted by Tony’s to conduct a Remediation Effectiveness Study in thier beneficiary communities in Ghana. The goal is to map out effective and cost-efficient remediation interventions based on demographics (gender, age) and household circumstances (size, income, female-headed households). These insights will inform actionable and appropriate recommendations to enhance child labor remediation efforts.
PDA’s first step is to host an online workshop for collaborative discussions among the research teams from Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Tony’s Open Chain. This session will align all parties on research objectives, approach, timelines, and deliverables. Together, the group will refine research questions, sample selection criteria, data collection tools, and the analysis plan to ensure that they meet the study’s desired objectives.
