Project Snapshot:
Commissioned by the girls’ education unit of the Ghana Education Service and Camfed, this study examined gender dynamics within Junior High School governance structures. The research focused on how gendered membership, participation, and decision-making processes affect the mainstreaming of gender issues, the creation of gender-friendly school environments, and pupil retention, particularly benefiting female students.
Project Objectives:
- Determine the extent to which school governance structures are gendered.
- Assess how these gender dynamics impact the mainstreaming of gender issues and the creation of inclusive school environments.
- Evaluate the influence of governance dynamics on pupil retention in Junior High Schools.
PDA’s Task:
PDA conducted comprehensive field research, including data collection in 8 schools across 4 districts in the Northern and Eastern Regions, and analyzed the impact of gender dynamics in school governance.
How We Went About It:
- Field Research: Utilized surveys, interviews, and focus groups in selected schools.
- Data Analysis: Examined the composition and processes of School Management Committees and other governance structures.
- Reporting: Compiled findings to provide actionable insights and recommendations for policy improvement.
