The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) is the Australian Government’s specialist agricultural research-for-development agency. ACIAR’s purpose is to contribute to reducing poverty and improving the livelihoods of many in the Indo-Pacific region. ACIAR works with public and private research institutions to improve the productivity and sustainability of agricultural systems.
To support evidenced-based livestock investment in Ghana and Nigeria, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has commissioned PDA to undertake a livestock ecosystem scoping study in Ghana and Nigeria. The study is conducted across Northern Savannah, Transitional, Humid / Mixed and Coastal zones of Ghana and Nigeria.
ACTIVITIES
- PDA has conducted desk reviews of project documents and other relevant documents, and developed qualitative tools for data collection
- PDA has convened co-creation workshops with stakeholders in both the northern and southern belts of Ghana’s livestock value chain
- PDA has conducted Key Informant interviews with stakeholders in the livestock ecosystem in Ghana.
- PDA will convene a co-creation workshop with stakeholders in Nigeria’s livestock value chain
The findings of this study will generate a comprehensive understanding of the alignment of research institutions, government agencies and development partners’ priorities with the national livestock constraints catalogues in both countries. Findings from this study will also support the design and delivery of livestock research activities over the next 1-3 years that enhance productivity, resilience, and livelihoods for smallholder farmers with particular attention to species-specific, and gender-related constraints.
