Project Snapshot:
PDA facilitated a high-level roundtable discussion on 11th June 2015, centered on an 82-page HRW report that highlighted the use of hazardous child labor in Ghana’s unlicensed mining sector. The discussion brought together government representatives, private sector actors, NGOs, and other stakeholders to deliberate on the report’s findings and explore actionable solutions to eliminate child labor from the gold supply chain.
Project Objectives:
- Discuss and critically evaluate HRW’s report on child labor in Ghana’s mining sector.
- Engage a broad range of stakeholders in identifying immediate steps for removing child labor from international gold supply chains.
- Foster collaborative dialogue to shape future advocacy and policy recommendations.
PDA’s Task:
- Facilitate the roundtable discussion.
- Support HRW through data collection that underpinned the report.
- Coordinate stakeholder engagement to ensure a comprehensive debate on the report’s recommendations.
How We Went About It:
- Roundtable Organization: Convened a multi-stakeholder roundtable on 11th June 2015, timed strategically on the eve of World Day Against Child Labor.
- Facilitated Dialogue: Structured discussions to analyze the report’s key findings, discuss challenges, and brainstorm potential measures for eliminating child labor in the mining sector.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Invited representatives from government, the private sector, and civil society to contribute diverse perspectives to the conversation.
